Shopping is the examining of goods or services from retailers with intent to purchase at that time. Shopping is the activity of selection and/or purchase. In some contexts it is considered a leisure activity as well as an economic one.

Shopping can be traced back to many civilizations in history. In ancient Rome, there was Trajan's Market with tabernas that served as retailing units. Shopping list are known to be used by Romans as one was discovered by Hadrian's wall dated back 75-125 AD written for a soldier.^[1]

When one talks of shopping in ancient Rome we also have to consider the markets, which like nowadays were often dedicated to specific products such as meat, vegetables or oil. The markets were called Forums and these were more than just markets as we know them.

At the foot of the Acropolis of Athens, near the Theseion metro station and bordering on the streets where the Sunday street market takes place, is the archaeological site of the ancient Agora., which means 'market' in Greek. In ancient times the Agora was the political, cultural and religious centre as well. The administrative buildings and the temples were built in this area, where the public services and the courts of law were also based. This was where Athenians gathered on a daily basis not only to buy and sell their goods, but also to learn the news, to criticize the government, to exchange views or just gossip.

The history of this area goes back to Neolithic times and the site includes monuments of different periods. From the Classical to the 11th century AD represented by the church of the Ayioi Apostoloi.

Modern Times

The Country Club Plaza, founded by the J.C. Nichols Company is accredited with being the first shopping mall which opened near Kansas City, Missouri USA ., in 1922. The first enclosed mall called Southdale opened in Edina, Minnesota (near Minneapolis) in 1956. The first of the "mega malls" was The West Edmonton Mall on 170th Street Alberta, Canada, which opened in 1981 - with more than 800 stores and a hotel, amusement park, miniature-golf course, church, "water park" for sunbathing and surfing, a zoo and a 438-foot-long lake and is touted as "The World's Largest Entertainment and Shopping Centre"

Shopping Carts

Sylvan Goldman invented the first shopping cart in 1936. Sylvan owned a chain of  Oklahoma City grocery stores called Standard/Piggly-Wiggly. He invented the first shopping cart by adding two wire basket and wheels to a folding chair. Goldman, together with mechanic Fred Young, later designed a dedicated shopping cart in 1947 and formed the Folding Carrier Co. to manufacture the carts.

In 1946, Orla Watson, of Kansas City, MO, invented the telescoping shopping cart. By using hinged baskets, each shopping cart fitted into the shopping cart ahead for compact storage. The telescoping shopping carts were first used at Floyd Day's Super Market in 1947.
